The Ranger (NGS) Ranger class is one of ten classes available to players in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis.

Basic information

For information about Ranger's weapons, see /Equipment. For information about its Class Skills, see Skill Tree.

Rangers can equip Assault Rifles and Launchers. Contrary to its name, the class is at its strongest at a medium attack range while still being deadly at close range, and thus it does not often want to actually be at maximum attack range.

As a Main Class

Main class Ranger's core feature is access to the Blight Rounds skill, which grants every player in the instance a 20% to 25% damage bonus to the part of the enemy struck by it.

While never essential by any means, this makes Ranger an essential class for parties that want to maximize their damage dealt. Similarly, a skilled Ranger can effectively "lead" parties to attacking certain targets through the use of Blight Rounds.

As a Sub Class

Sub Class Ranger has a niche in quests like Planetcrusher Blitz where party members need to split up. By using the Blight Rounds Self Benefit skill, players can still gain a 15% bonus to their damage dealt as long as there's a Blight Round active.

Outside of these situations, the Stealth Strike skill allows Ranger to be used as subclass for Gunner to enable Long Range Advantage at almost all times, as well as allow Gunner to use their Rifles more effectively.

Other classes with Long Range Advantage can consider taking a Ranger subclass, but it is often not worth it.

Strengths

  • Blight Rounds
  • Both Assault Rifle and Launcher have great Photon Blasts
  • Incredible access to invulnerability frames and counterattacks

Weaknesses

  • Your own damage is balanced around Blight Rounds, so you need to learn to use it
  • It can be very easy to place Blight Rounds somewhere you don't intend to place it, or to miss your last shot entirely
  • Launcher's Photon Blast is a live projectile, so it can miss
  • Due to Ideal Range mechanics, your damage will fall off if you travel too far from the enemy

Misconceptions

  • Even if you don't use your Rifle often, you still need to place Blight Rounds
  • Rifle normal attacks are not viable unless Rifle Attack Impact is active, and should only be used if you are otherwise completely out of options
